Substance Use Services | Groups
Sources offers a range of group experiences to assist people who wish to sustain the changes they have made in their substance use patterns by learning new concepts and practices or addressing issues that may have contributed to their substance use, such as depression, anxiety or trauma. With the exception of the Affected Others Support Group, each of our groups are run when we have enough participants signed up for them. Please let your counsellor or the Intake Coordinator if you are interested in any of our groups and we will put you on the list.
Choices: A specialized 8 week psycho-educational groups called Choices that run several times throughout the year. The Choices group is based on Smart Recovery principles which views substance misuse as a maladaptive coping strategy that can be changed through education, personal awareness and self motivation.
Mindfulness Based Relapse Prevention: It is only possible to avoid relapses if we are able to recognize when our thoughts and feelings may be leading us closer to that possibility. We may have an abundance of recovery tools yet not notice the moments when those tools are most needed to be pulled out of the toolbox. Mindfulness is defined as the ability to pay attention, on purpose, in the present moment, non-judgementally. In this group, participants cultivate a capacity for mindful awareness that can keep them out of automatic pilot mode and develop ways of noticing triggers, cravings, thoughts and emotions while remaining grounded in the importance of their life goals. Mindfulness is also a way of being in each moment without the need to alter our experience, which is the polar opposite of addiction and compulsion.
Seeking Safety: For anyone who may have encountered overwhelming life experiences that were traumatic in nature which when triggered in the present may lead someone to use substances. This group teaches effective coping skills for people to be able to stay safe from relapse or from further harmful experiences when either trauma or cravings to use substances are triggered. This group does not probe into the pasts of the participants. It enables people to find stronger stability for their recovery.
Affected Others Support Group: Sources Addiction Services is committed to providing information, counselling and support to our community members who are affected by the substance use of a loved one. Through this support group, we provide a confidential, safe and non-judgemental environment for people to share their experiences of struggle and hope with others who can relate. In addition, group members will learn new information and strategies for coping and understanding. This drop-in group runs the first and third Tuesday of every month- please call to inquire about our next group date (604-538-2522).
Emotional Wellness: A 6 week therapy group for those in recovery with anxiety and/or depression. Please join us as we increase your understanding of depression and anxiety. Learn how to engage in positive behaviour and thought processes which support overall wellness and optimal recovery in a safe and confidential manner.
Recognizing Resilience: If you are struggling with what to do with your love and concern for your teenaged child who is using substances, step off the roller coaster and find helpful support. This is a safe, confidential space for caregivers to share, explore and learn about: adolescent development and ideas about what helps and hinders; the concept of resilience and what builds it; why youth may begin or continue to maintain relationships with substances; how to enhance relationships between caregivers and teens; values, beliefs and feelings about substances substance use and parenting; and strategies to consider when exploring boundaries and imparting consequences with teens. This group will run Thursdays 5:00-6:30pm, November 3 - December 15, 2016. To register, please call 604-538-2522 or email us at firstname.lastname@example.org
