THANK YOU FOR COMING TO OUR 40th ANNIVERSARY COMMUNITY CELEBRATION!

On Saturday, September 15, 2018, the community came out to the White Rock Elementary School Grounds to celebrate SOURCES’ 40th Anniversary.

It was a wet and grey day but that didn’t dampen anyone’s mood. People pulled on their rainboots, brought their umbrellas, and came out despite the drizzle to enjoy the fun activities, resource fair, entertainment, food and more. With Global BC’s Chief Meteorologist Mark Madryga emceeing, he cheerfully foretold the sun would shine… and later on, it did!

Our celebration began with an opening by Semiahmoo First Nation Chief, Harley Chappell:

…SOURCES is doing a lot of good work here in the South Surrey and White Rock area. One of the things we all know, whether we get into the political realm or in leadership or the helping field, is we know it’s very difficult to say ‘no.’ It’s very hard, because it hurts us inside. We say when you take that choice to become a helper, you give away all rights to say ‘no’ to the people—the people who ask for your help—you find a way to do it. So, I really want to thank the organizers, especially SOURCES, for the invitation as well as the work that they’re doing here in our community and for the people.

Next, Mark Donnelly, a White Rock resident famous for singing Canada’s national anthem at the NHL’s Vancouver Canucks Games, sang… of course, “O Canada.”

We also heard opening remarks from Surrey-White Rock MP, Gordon Hogg:

…We have a great social service network to support and grow our community. All of you here today are part of that—part of ensuring that we continue to have that caring and commitment in our community that shows we support each other, we care for each other, and for those of us in need at different times, we’re here to support them. Thank you so very much and to SOURCES, congratulations on 40 years.

Surrey-Panorama MLA, Marvin Hunt:

…I’m pleased to be here to join with you in the celebration of SOURCES. It is so necessary that we have support systems available for people to be able to help them in areas so we can build community together, we can build productive individuals and great citizens—and so, my hat goes off to SOURCES.

White Rock Mayor, Wayne Baldwin:

…There is no question that SOURCES does a huge amount for this community, and it does it so very well. I’d like to present a certificate of special recognition: White Rock City Council would like to recognize the Sources Community Resources Society on the occasion of its 40th anniversary and to express gratitude for the longstanding contributions the Society has made in promoting social wellness and supporting people and families of all ages across the Lower Mainland and Northern B.C. White Rock City Council recognizes the Society as an outstanding community builder and expresses gratitude to the Society’s staff, members and volunteers, for making a difference by educating, supporting and enriching the lives of those in need, and making our community stronger, healthier and more connected. You guys do a fantastic job, thank you so much.

Surrey Acting Mayor, Coun. Vera LeFranc:

…Taking care of one another is a trait that can often be overlooked or dismissed in today’s world. That’s why an organization like SOURCES is so vital to our communities, and it is a testament to the resilience of SOURCES that it has not only endured but continues to flourish after 40 years. The role that SOURCES plays in making our neighbourhoods an even better place for all to learn and grow and be cared for, cannot be praised enough. Our schools, workplaces and communities are better, because of the continued contributions and hard work of SOURCES. One of the things that I really appreciate about SOURCES is how innovative they are; how their leadership really encourages every single one of their staff to do things differently, to do things better and do things in service to community. So right now, I really want to congratulate you on behalf of Mayor and all of Council, on 40 years.

President of Sources Community Resources Society, Bruce Hayne:

…This is just an outstanding organization and so many of us who are friends of SOURCES know. I think it’s very true that a society and a community can be judged on how it treats its least fortunate amongst them. Whether it’s people who need food in our community, whether it’s women and children that need to get away from abusive relationships, whether it’s people struggling with addictions, or people that just need some guidance and some help along the way, SOURCES has been there, now, for 40 years.

I’d like to really thank the board of directors – they’ve been a tremendous group to work with, and they, along with all the volunteers of this organization, give so much back to the community. I’d also like to thank the staff and the management of SOURCES who work tirelessly and far beyond it just being a job. I’ve sat on many boards in my career, and SOURCES has got to be, in my opinion, the most valuable in terms of what it does for our community. Every donation and every volunteer hour is just magnified many times over in our community by the great work that’s done by so many volunteers and staff. Thank you all for coming out to our 40th celebration.
