Position: Manager, Legal Information and Advocacy
Location: Newton Resource Centre
Hours: 35 hours per week Mon – Fri 8:30 am to 4:30 pm
We are looking for a Manager to join our Sources Legal Information and Advocacy program team! This individual will coordinate the Pro Bono clinic, act as a liaison between Legal (Family and Poverty law) program and relevant groups and oversee the operations of the program.

Legal Information and Advocacy Services
The program assists in matters of separation and divorce, guardianship and parenting arrangements, child and spousal support and protection orders. We support individuals in navigating the family justice system by providing legal information, assistance with court forms, court preparation and emotional support. We assist with both provincial and Supreme Court matters. The program also provides support for matters relating to income assistance, provincial and federal disability benefits, other federal income support programs, tenancy, and debt.
Responsibilities:
- · Supervise the Legal and Advocacy team and be available to de-brief on clients, caseload and review documents they have prepared
- · Research current policies and procedures, laws, new bills and case law etc. to keep current with various client issues
- · Ensure legal resources are kept current and are available for team’s use
- Maintain contact with lawyers and Legal Services Society to build and maintain rapport and keep up to date with client issues
- Act as a resource to other staff, volunteers and support groups on an as needed basis
- Screen and identify the clients’ legal issues according to the program guidelines and funding mandate
- Provide emotional support, legal resources, information and appropriate referrals by telephone, website, email and appointment
- Write grants and proposals to secure funding
- Build and maintain a positive working relationship with other advocates, lawyers, Legal Services Society, funding bodies and other relevant groups and individuals
- Screen and refer women to the Pro Bono lawyers and Pro Bono Clinics
- Follow up with lawyers/clients to monitor progress
Qualifications:
- · Post-secondary education/or equivalent training and education in Criminology, psychology, sociology or Family Law or a related social services program
- · Five years experience working in a related field
- · Good understanding of Family, Poverty, Civil and Immigration Law
- · Knowledge of community resources and other social service agencies
- · Must be discreet and able to manage confidential information
- · Ability to work effectively with individuals who are experiencing a wide range of sensitive issues
