Mobile Food Bank Delivery Volunteer

The White Rock / South Surrey Food Bank serves approximately 1000 individuals a week by providing nutritious food and support to community members in need. We strive to raise awareness about poverty and to involve the community in solutions. Our Food Banks are proud to offer a choice-based model for our clients—this contributes to the preservation of dignity and power of choice and lends to an overall more positive experience while accessing the Food Bank.

The Mobile Food Bank is a program designed to support Food Bank clients experiencing mobility or health barriers to attend the services in person.  Volunteers with this program will deliver groceries to Food Bank users on a bi-weekly basis.

To be successful, volunteers must:

  • Be 18+ years of age.
  • Have their own vehicle, be an experienced driver with a valid Class 5 Driver’s license and clean driver’s record.
  • Have the ability to lift a minimum 30 lbs.
  • Have the ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Knowledgeable of community and surrounding areas an asset.
  • Be flexible, detail oriented and possesses an ability to take initiative, accept direction and work effectively both independently and in a team environment.
  • Have the ability to work well with diverse client populations. Ability to relate to individuals across all socioeconomic and cultural groups.
  • Have an awareness and understanding of poverty, mental health, disability and trauma-related issues, including sensitivity to client needs.
  • Be courteous and respectful of clients and their property.
  • Have the ability to build rapport with various individuals while maintaining a professional demeanour and firm professional boundaries.
  • Willingness to secure a Criminal Records Check. All positions have been designated by the Sources Community Resource Society as requiring a Criminal Records Review prior to an applicant being employed in this capacity. Certain police records may preclude the appointment to certain positions.

Responsibilities:

  • Attend the White Rock/South Surrey Food Bank bi-weekly to pick up approximately 6 boxes of groceries.
  • Deliver each box to a Food Bank client.
  • Ensure the Food Bank client is home for receipt and acknowledges delivery by signing. Do not leave boxes if client is not at home.
  • Do not enter homes of clients.
  • Do not accept renumeration from clients for deliveries, including cash or gifts.
  • Alert the Food Bank staff of any concerns that may arise during deliveries.
  • Submits monthly Driver‘s Log at the end of each month to the Food Securities Coordinator for mileage reimbursement.
  • Ensures that Sources’ Policies and Procedures are followed as well as the operating procedures of the Sources Food Bank program.
  • Ensures that the rights, dignity and confidentiality of all clients are maintained.
  • Ensures the health and safety of all clients in the course of working with them.

Time Commitment:

This opportunity requires a minimum 6-month commitment and operates every other Monday starting at 9:00 am. Deliveries take approximately 2 hours to complete.
