Over 500 South Surrey/White Rock Neighbours Brighten up Coldest Night of the Year Walk Raising nearly $215,000 and counting

White Rock, BC – March 3, 2026 – This past Saturday over 500 White Rock/South Surrey neighbours brightened up Sources Foundation’s Coldest Night of the Year (CNOY) walkathon, raising $215,000 in support of individuals experiencing food insecurity, homelessness and mental health challenges. A separate $30,000 anonymous gift was given directly to SOURCES, making our total community impact nearly $245,000 and counting!

True to this year’s theme, “This is OUR neighbourhood,” residents stepped up to walk, fundraise and volunteer in support of their neighbours. The support received from the community put White Rock/South Surrey as the top third fundraiser among over 220 locations in Canada.

“The generosity and heart of this community is truly inspiring,” said David MacIntyre, President & CEO of Sources Foundation. “My sincere thanks to each and every neighbour for coming out in support of those among us experiencing hardships.”

This is the 13th year of the walk for SOURCES. As one of the biggest walkathons in the Canada, SOURCES participates in CNOY to fundraise for some of their most critical services. According to 2025 Point-in-Time Homeless Count for Greater Vancouver, the number of unsheltered individuals in Surrey jumped by 46% between 2023 and 2025. SOURCES will be directing funds from this event to their homelessness prevention program, homeless outreach services and the White Rock/South Surrey food bank.

White Rock Mayor Megan Knight spoke about the importance of the cause and shared why she returns each year as a walker. Celebrity fitness trainer Tommy Europe kept energy high, while the Amazing Grace Choir joined the event for the first time with a moving rendition of O Canada. Live music by Chris Thornley helped keep participants motivated along the route.

After the walk, participants warmed up with soup from Sheila’s Catering, hot dogs, mini donuts from Lil’ Ooties, coffee and hot chocolate by Kingha Coffee, and treats from HomeLife Benchmark Realty. Pebble Lane Learning hosted face painting and crafts for children. The evening concluded with heartfelt thanks to the volunteers and Sources staff whose efforts helped ensure a safe and welcoming experience for all.

“It’s important for us at White Rock Baptist Church to stay connected and engaged with people in our local community, and that includes those who are experiencing hurt, hunger, and homelessness. We know that by coming alongside the good work that SOURCES does, we can see our community changed for good,” Hannah Juras, Captain of White Rock Baptist Church CNOY walk team.

This year’s top individual fundraiser was Rose Block raising $9,900. The top fundraising team was White Rock Baptist Church, bringing in nearly $48,000. Other notable teams included Rotary Club of White Rock, United Feet for the Street, and Scotia United.

Sources Foundation gratefully acknowledges Supporting Sponsors Elkay Development Ltd. and HomeLife Benchmark Realty for their continued generosity.
