Food Bank Volunteer Driver Assistant

Sources Langley Food Bank serves approximately 1000 individuals a week by providing nutritious food and support to community members in need. The Sources Langley Food Bank strives to raise awareness about poverty, and to involve the community in solutions. Our Food Bank is proud to offer a choice based model for our clients. This model contributes to the preservation of dignity and power of choice for the clients, and lends to an overall more positive experience while assessing the Food Bank.

The Food Bank Volunteer Driver Assistant is unique in that the volunteers in this position act as public ambassadors on behalf of the Food Bank.  Using the Sources transit van, drivers and driver assistants travel out into the community to pick up both donated and purchased items to bring back to the centre for sorting and distribution. Throughout the course of the pickups, drivers interact with store managers, employees, and residents of the community.  Our volunteers are a key element in helping raise awareness in the community of how we can work together to achieve food security for all.

This position requires individuals to:

  • Possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Possess a solid understanding of the Food Bank’s services and be comfortable communicating this knowledge with members of the community.
  • Be able to work with a minimum of supervision.
  • Knowledge of community and surrounding areas an asset.
  • Be flexible, detail oriented with strong organizational skills and possess an ability to take initiative, accept direction and work effectively both independently and in a team environment.
  • Have the ability to work well with diverse client populations.  Ability to relate to individuals across all socioeconomic and cultural groups, looking through a lens of poverty and poverty-related issues.
  • Have the ability to build rapport with a variety of individuals while maintaining a professional demeanor and firm professional boundaries.
  • Have the ability to lift a minimum 50 Lbs.
  • Willingness to secure a Criminal Record Check (at no cost to Sources volunteers).  All positions have been designated by Sources Community Resource Society as requiring a Criminal Records Review prior to an applicant being employed in this capacity.  Certain police records may preclude the appointment to certain positions.

Time Commitment:  One day a week between Tuesday to Friday, from 7:00 am to 11:00 am.  A minimum 6 month commitment is required.
