Volunteer Opportunities

The ability to get to essential healthcare appointments can be challenging for many people, particularly for our senior community members.  The Volunteer Wheels program provides transportation for residents of White Rock and South Surrey who are experiencing these barriers. Volunteer drivers use their own vehicles to transport clients to appointments throughout the Lower Mainland and provide friendly companionship and support during the journey.
Drivers pick clients up from their homes, accompany them to the appointment location, wait nearby during the appointment, and ensure they return home safely. Volunteer Wheels is a transportation and companionship program; volunteers do not provide personal care or medical assistance.

To be successful in this position:
You will be at least 18 years of age.
You have the ability to work well with diverse client populations.  You can relate to individuals across all socioeconomic and cultural groups, looking through a lens of poverty and poverty-related issues.
You have the ability to exercise good judgement in a demanding and continually changing work environment.
You have excellent interpersonal, communication, and listening skills.
You demonstrate respect, empathy, and sensitivity to clients’ needs, abilities, and privacy.
You hold a valid Class 5 driver’s licence and a clean driving record within the last 5 years.
You have access to a reliable, safety-inspected vehicle.
You carry a minimum of $3 million in third-party liability insurance (Sources reimburses the difference between standard $1 million coverage and the required $3 million coverage).
You are willing to secure a Criminal Record Check (at no cost to Sources volunteers).  All positions have been designated by Sources Community Resource Society as requiring a Criminal Records Review prior to an applicant being employed in this capacity.  Certain police records may preclude the appointment to certain positions.

Time Commitment
Volunteer drivers are asked to commit to a minimum of one drive per week, based on their availability and client requests. A minimum commitment of six months is required to help ensure consistency and reliability for clients.
