Rotary Clubs Serve More than 600 Pancakes Raising Over $12,000 for Sources Food Banks
WHITE ROCK/SOUTH SURREY – June 09, 2023 – Six Rotary clubs donated $12,000 to social wellness organization Sources Community Resources Society (SOURCES). The money will be used to support SOURCES’ two food banks.
The funds were raised through a Pancake Breakfast, a family-friendly fundraiser organized by Rotarians. The event was extra special this year as it made a comeback after a four-year hiatus because of the pandemic. Held at the White Rock Baptist Church, the breakfast was attended by over 300 people. It was organized and supported by the Rotary Clubs of Nature Celebrators, Peace Arch Peninsula, Semiahmoo, South Surrey, White Rock and the Pacific Northwest Passport Club.
“Our Pancake Breakfast is a wonderful reason to connect with everyone in the community while raising funds for an imperative cause faced by our community,” says Linda Hensman, Assistant Governor for the Rotary Clubs in South Surrey/White Rock. “Food insecurity is an issue that no one deserves to face and we are so fortunate that so many within the community came out to show their support.”
Close to 60 volunteers helped to make and serve over 600 pancakes, 3 kg of bacon, 3 kg of sausages, 60 dozen eggs, 18 kg of hash browns, and 8 kg of oranges! Non-Rotarian volunteers provided entertainment in the form of a Ukelele band and a magician. Students from Tamanawis High School set up a Kids Korner to engage the little ones.
“Pancake Breakfast is a fun, lively event and we are thankful to everyone for supporting our food banks,” says David Young, CEO of SOURCES. “Because of friends like the Rotary, we are able to provide healthy food options to as many people as possible.”
Anyone with a valid government ID living within the area can register to receive two day’s worth of food per week. SOURCES also provides fresh produce, milk, nutritional supplements, school lunches, as well as baby formula and diapers at its two food banks.
